The Temporary Heavy Civil Estimator, based in Calgary, Alberta will play a crucial role in the accurate and timely preparation of comprehensive cost estimates for projects, encompassing materials and labor. This position involves the maintenance of a database of suppliers, contractors, and subcontractors, as well as the establishment of unit costs, labor rates, productivity factors, and location-specific impacts. The precision of the Civil Estimator is paramount to Morgans profitability, as underestimations can lead to significant financial losses, while overestimations may hinder our ability to secure bids. Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare full-cost estimates for conceptual, design-build, and general tender projects.
  • Calculate materials, labor, and equipment cost estimations based on project proposals, plans, estimates, and specifications.
  • Review project specifications and drawings to estimate costs and timelines for demolition, remediation, and civil construction activities.
  • Maintain a comprehensive list of suppliers, contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Provide guidance on proposal procedures to be followed.
  • Analyze received proposals, recommend/reject proposals, and negotiate contracts.
  • Establish unit costs, labor rates, productivity factors, and location-specific impacts.
  • Evaluate and suggest allowances for indirect costs, design unknowns, escalation, and contingency.
  • Present estimates and conduct review meetings with clients.
  • Coordinate risk and opportunity assessments with clients.
  • Review proposal specifications and drawings to determine scope of work and required estimate contents.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for estimate figures, including current pricing information from suppliers.
  • Collaborate with other departments, assisting in preparing estimates for various disciplines.
  • Review design options and recommend cost-effective solutions.
  • Develop bid strategies to enhance the company's competitive advantage.
  • Provide support for determining which projects to bid on in collaboration with corporate and project management teams.
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of final estimate packages before formal quotation.
  • Participate in presentations to management and clients, potentially contributing to closing the sale.
  • Offer technical assistance in negotiating contracts, change orders, and related matters.
  • Assist in preparing studies, materials and methods, recommendations, and cost estimates as required.
  • Perform additional assignments as directed by the supervisor.
  • Attend site visits and preconstruction meetings to evaluate and understand the project's scope in preparation for bidding.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Proficient in working collaboratively within a team, requiring minimal supervision.
  • Experience in demolition and remediation projects is considered an asset but not required. 
  • Strong ability to collaborate effectively with both customers and colleagues.
  • Demonstrated customer-focused approach, ensuring timely responsiveness to customer needs.
  • Proven track record of establishing and maintaining effective relationships with customers.
  • Exceptional adaptability to navigate changing circumstances.
  • Ability to read and interpret building specifications, blueprints, and as-builds.
  • High school diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent.
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in construction/engineering degree, or an appropriate field.
  • 5+ years of experience in cost estimation.
  • Must possess a valid class 5 driver’s license, with a clean 3-year abstract.
  • Mathematical skills and analytical skills necessary to do material and labour estimates.
  • Mathematical skills and analytical skills necessary to interpret job cost reports.
  • Ability to use cost-estimating software to prepare cost quotes and bids. Preferably HCSS Heavy bid.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (excel, word, project etc.)
  • Strong working mechanical knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Ability to readily determine the correct tools and equipment needed to do a job.
  • Client service and public interaction skills.

  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills to perform accurate quantity takeoffs, costs analysis and financial modeling for construction projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as interpersonal skills to interact with others

  • Meticulous attention to detail in reviewing project plans, specifications, and bid documents to ensure accuracy and completeness.
